The Day After

The past year has demonstrated that public employers need to be prepared for bargaining and factfinding while dealing with outside shocks like natural disasters, demonstrations, or a global pandemic. Partner Charles Sakai was joined by City of Oakland Human Resources Director Ian Appleyard and Allyson Cook, Chief Human Resources Officer for the East Bay Regional Parks District, to share their experience in this 2020 CALPELRA* conference session.

In this video, you’ll learn from practitioners who have successfully handled bargaining both during and after monumental actions like municipal bankruptcy, a takeover of city property by a protest movement, natural disasters, and a multi-day strike that shut down major city services. You’ll learn what it takes to heal the wounds and move forward, even when the path to agreement goes through factfinding and high stakes binding interest arbitration.
