Join the Sloan Sakai Yeung & Wong team at our League of California Cities Annual Conference & Expo breakout sessions on avoiding the Cadillac Tax on retiree medical plans and lessons learned from what is likely the largest municipal fraud case in the history of California, the City of Beaumont scandal!

The Beaumont CA Scandal: Can It Happen to You?
Wednesday, September 12, 3:45 to 5:00 p.m.

Bob Deis, the Managing Consultant from the consulting arm of our firm — Management Strategies Group — will both present and moderate a panel discussion in the aftermath of an unprecedented corruption scandal in the City of Beaumont. The Court levied a $67 million judgment against the City — which was twice their total annual budget. $20 million in claims were filed against Beaumont; it was quietly insolvent for at least eight years; and, seven City executives were indicted by the District Attorney. Hear from Bob and the rest of the team on how they handled a substantial crisis in record time, all without resorting to a bankruptcy filing.

Bob will also draw on his unique experience from helping other distressed cities and share the common ways they gradually start down the path that leads to substantial trouble. This will be provided in the hope that attendees can ask pertinent questions within their own cities.

Trading in the Cadillac for an OPEB-free Prius
Thursday, September 13, 8:15 to 9:30 a.m.

Hear from Sloan Sakai partner Dania Wong and Segal Consulting Senior Vice President Tom Morrison on the potential impact of the impending “Cadillac Tax” on high premium retiree medical insurance plans. Attendees will take away a clear understanding of what is behind the reasoning for this added tax on benefits, why it is likely to remain in the law and how it will impact future negotiations with public entity bargaining groups. Special emphasis will be made on strategies for avoiding these taxes while reducing liabilities for Other Post-Employment Benefits and alternative plan designs that are modeled to avoid these taxes in the future.

Please feel free to join us at these sessions or visit our booth throughout the conference at Booth 1153 for ways Sloan Sakai and our Management Strategies Group can best help you. We hope to see you there!
